About
About Frank Bonsal III
I am an education entrepreneur, investor, practitioner. With twenty five years of service to education broadly wrought, I work to bring scalable, authentic innovation, productivity and pedagogical and administrative change to institutions and enterprises.
Currently, I am a General Partner at New Markets, which I joined in 2007, and, in this capacity, serve as Board Director, Board Observer or Advisor at Apangea Learning, Questar Assessment, BetterLesson, Starfish Retention Solutions and Moodlerooms.
Since the turn of the Millenium, I have been a Partner of Bonsal Capital, a family office founded by my father and NEA Co-Founder Frank Bonsal, Jr. For Bonsal Capital, I am the lead manager of our education investments and, in a unique apprenticeship with my father, have worked on a multitude of direct and indirect investments across numerous sectors. We have made over fifteen investments in education, companies such as American Public Education, Blackboard, Capella Education, Flat World Knowledge, Headsprout, Moodlerooms, Smarthinking, Spectrum K12 and Straighterline. Prior to Bonsal Capital, I was a K-12 educator (mostly middle school English and history and high school football and lacrosse) with over 15 years experience across seven states and with briefs stints in the U.K. and Japan.
As part of what rounds out my solutions-oriented, philanthropic persona, I serve several education-related nonprofit enterprises in the Mid-Atlantic and New England regions and regularly participate in national grant and education industry-related panels and committees. I have also served as Alumni Board President and Member of the Campaign Steering Committee for Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College.
I am a graduate of the University of New Hampshire, where I majored in English Teaching, and received M.Ed. and M.B.A. degrees from Vanderbilt University. I am married and have three children.
